Maps collection of Archive OUN

Maps collection of Archive OUN

Map collections are usually the decorative feature of any archive or museum. They should be bright and informative.
Understandably, there are few, compared to other documents or exhibits. Archivists willing to tackle them must first discover and develope an authentic and distinctive map. They are fairly easy to describe and restore. They cause particular interest and demand for further use and distribution.
But when we want to digitize them – usually we have the problem of the format scanner. The largest format which can be found in an ordinary office is A3. But the maps are often much larger. I have seen exhibitions online in institutions where the overall picture is only 390 kb.
This problem can be solved by using the "stitching" Scanned file Image Composite Editor. It is used by the archive centre OUNUIS to scan large format A3 maps.
The number of maps found, restored and digitized in the AOUNUIS collection total 61 files. The maps have different languages (Ukrainian, English, German, Polish, Russian, Dutch, French, Spanish) many sizes, scales and different periods. They are all originals. One copy dates back to1733. Also included are interesting parallels: school atlases from the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. One of the maps - "Ukrainian SSR & Moldavian SSR" from1965 complete with fixed place names written in Ukrainian. So accurate, blade and ink that is only noticeable after scanning.
All maps and atlases are exhibited online at AOUNUIS. In each case, they are written not only in Ukrainian, but also in English and sometimes in another original language.
For  a convenient use of the map and to view the full width. Press BOX, or downloaded by clicking DOWNLOAD of view. Each page (single file) can be downloaded by clicking DOWNLOAD at the front of the file in the preview window.

The Ukrainian Information Service (UIS London) is an information bureau established in London during the 1970s as the successor of the Ukrainian Publishers. Originally, the aim of UIS London was the dissemination of factual information about Ukraine, in particular, Ukrainian politics, history and current affairs.

Since its inception, UIS London has liaised with government officials, think tank organisations, the mass media and charities working to raise the profile of Ukraine in the UK and strengthening bilateral relations.

The collection of documents, related to this activity, formed the foundations of the archives, situated on this web-site.

Although the nature of work UIS London undertook altered after Ukrainian independence, the basic tenets of promoting, advocating and strengthening Ukraine has remained.
